Hey Mommy and Daddy, I’ve been growing so much in this small protected space,
But soon we will meet face to face
It must be exciting and scary to prepare for me to arrive
Making sure you have everything you will need so I can surrive
I want to tell you some things before I see you with my eyes
And make my journey outside of you, and you hear my first cries
There is so much confusing information being thrown your way
With more advice than you can process everyday
One that says one thing, and then something else says another
You want to get it right so you can be my perfect father and mother
First, I want to tell you that it’s just not possible to do everything right
You’ll be on an endless journey striving with all your might
Towards a goal that can never be met
Leaving us both tired and upset
Let me see that you mess up and get things wrong sometimes, too
That you can get frustrated and don’t know what to do
When you struggle to know the right choice to make
Just know I will learn so much more from your mistakes
It may seem like you need to always show me that your strong
But it’s ok for you to admit to me when you’ve been wrong
The times that I watch you get back up after you fumble
Will be teaching moments showing me how to be humble
When I cry, come to me and pick me up and hold me close
When I grow up, you will miss this the most
Coming to me when I cry is a must
It will help me learn how to trust
When the days feel like they will never end
Get up the next day and try again
Show me how to share
Teach me to think of others first and how to care
There will be times you will get frustrated with me
But it’s really important to let me see
How you handle your important role
In showing me how to have self-control
I promise you it is a fact
I’ll watch everything to see how you will react
I’ll see everything you do
And I’ll want to be just like you
You are all I will know
These are the moments that will help me grow
When I learn to crawl and then start to stand tall
There are times you will have to watch me fall
These will be my first independent steps apart from you
Guide me in what I should do
There will be times even though you warned me I will have to get hurt
Be there to correct me and wipe off the dirt
Ask me if I’m okay and if I need a hug
I might need the comfort inside your arms where it’s warm and snug
You will have to discipline me when I don’t obey
You will have to correct me on some things that I say
Sometimes, when I don’t listen, you may get upset
Please take time to calm down so you don’t say or do something you regret
After you correct me, make sure I know that you love me and it’s your job to keep me safe
Wrap me inside of your warm embrace
Kiss me on the cheek or the top of my head
Instead of frustration, let me feel your love instead
Feeling you love me even when I get things wrong
Will help me know that I belong
In my family and on this earth
With a purpose and self-worth
Teach me about Jesus and make sure I know how much He loves me
Make sure I know how He died on a cross so I could be free
Teach me that I am made in God’s image perfectly
When I was created secretly
Inside the womb under my mommy’s heart
When He knew about me from the very start
That before anyone knew my name
He knew me before the earth became
Teach me how to talk to God and to pray
Remind me that I’m fearfully and wonderfully made
The times that others try and convince me of what I am not
Remind me of who I am in case I forgot
Teach me that the words I say have power
They can tear down or build a strong tower
Teach me God’s word so I don’t forget ever
So I can fight the enemy’s lies no matter how clever
Teach me how to get them into my heart and mind
So I’m so full of it, there’s nothing but Jesus that you’ll find
Teach me to always work as if I’m working for Jesus, who sees
Teach me He is a best friend who lives inside of me
Teach me that someone will always have to lose so someone else can win the prize
And knowing that will always make me wise
Teach me to celebrate others when they get what I want and are doing great
Teach me to be patient and how to wait
As I grow, it will seem like I’m moving further from the grasp of your hand
It will seem like it’s happening faster than you planned
Show me that different roads can lead me to the wrong place
But the right one will always be in the Lord’s embrace
Teach me every morning is another chance to start new
To talk to God first so I’ll know what to do
It will be hard to watch me grow
And release my once little hand and let go
I promise you God will take it and guide me
In the place he wants me to be
In this life and on this earth
To show others their immeasurable worth
I will be able to show them because you taught me
Who God created me to be
Through this journey we’re both about to take
There will be moments your heart will break
Now, before you hold me in your arms like you have waited so long to do
In this life for both of us that is brand new
The most important thing that I need you to know
From now and through the years, as you watch me grow
On this journey, you’re about to take that will be new every day
Always point me to Jesus and pray
Trust me in the hands of God above
Cover me in prayers and His love
When I soon make the journey outside
Jesus will be holding me beaming with pride
God chose you above all others
To be my father and mother
He wants you to help me grow strong
And to teach me right and wrong
Give me back to God Mommy and Daddy and do your best
And trust Him to do the rest
I won’t remember any of this after my journey to you
But Jesus wanted me to tell you, so you knew what to do
I’m safe with Him now until I see your face
In the most beautiful and special place
Under mommy’s heart, hearing it beat
Until the day God opens my eyes and we finally meet.
